Living in Westport, CT: What to Know Before You Move

An express train from Westport reaches Grand Central in a little over an hour; a local takes closer to an hour and a half — and that gap shapes which part of town is right for you. Westport is one of those towns people fall for on a Saturday and then start seriously researching on Monday. What is less obvious than the beach and the downtown is how the town works day to day once you live here.

Start with the commute, because for most families moving from the city it drives everything else. Westport sits on Metro-North’s New Haven Line, and an express into Grand Central runs a little over an hour; local trains take closer to an hour and a half. That difference matters more than people expect. Two houses can be a mile apart and feel very different on a Tuesday morning depending on which trains you can realistically catch and how long the walk or drive to the platform is. Saugatuck, the neighborhood built around the station, carries a premium for exactly that reason.

Westport does not really have one character — it has several, and they are worth understanding before you tour anything. Saugatuck is the walkable, restaurant-dense pocket near the train. Old Hill is established and quietly traditional, with larger lots and mature landscaping. Compo Beach is where you go for a shorter walk to the water and a genuinely social summer. Greens Farms sits on the Fairfield side with some of the town’s most private properties. Each of these carries its own price expectation, and buyers who tour across all of them without narrowing first usually end up frustrated.

Downtown is the part people underestimate. Main Street and the surrounding blocks stay busy year-round rather than emptying out after Labor Day, and the Westport Country Playhouse and Levitt Pavilion give the town a cultural life that most beach communities its size simply do not have. It is a real downtown, not a seasonal one.

On the practical side, plan to look closely at two things. First, flood zones — anything near the water or the Saugatuck River can carry insurance requirements that meaningfully change your monthly cost, and that is a conversation to have before you fall in love with a house, not after. Second, lot character. Westport’s topography varies a lot, and a listing photo will not tell you whether a backyard is usable or whether the property drops off sharply behind the house.

Westport also tends to reward buyers who are ready. Inventory in the most desirable pockets moves quickly, and the best homes frequently trade with very little time on the market — sometimes before they are widely marketed at all. If you are relocating on a timeline, being pre-approved and clear on your neighborhood priorities is worth more than any amount of weekend browsing.
